When Deputy District Attorney Michael Arnold is accused of murdering his wife, he calls on Cannon to help him.

Grace, Annie and Tommy are growing up fast as police officers, but nothing can prepare them for the turmoil they face every day. It’s a year since the fall of the McIntyre crime gang and the vacuum has been filled by rival gangs, all competing for dominance. Constable Shane Bradley is drafted in to help, but his motivations are unclear. Tommy is dangerously seduced by the world of intelligence policing, while Grace struggles to deal with her son’s absence, and growing feelings for fellow officer Stevie. As a young loyalist threatens to take over the city, the officers face a major gangland feud – culminating in a violent and devastating confrontation.

A dying prisoner, a former hit man confesses to Cannon that he killed his wife and child 14 years ago when Cannon was a cop. Cannon investigates to find the person responsible while trying to control his desire for revenge.

Cannon travels to the quiet, remote town of Mercer, California to help his friend Ian Kirk who is suspected of murdering his rich wife and her paramour Wade Gibson. Actor David Janssen plays Ian, a writer who met his wife Irene in Africa, got married and settled in her hometown. But Ian's considered an outsider who married for money. No one in town wants to believe that the local girl is responsible for her own death and that of her golden boy lover. The town would rather believe that the outcast is guilty of murdering his wife, whether or not he actually did it. As Cannon tries to prove his friend's innocence, he gets help from the mayor (actress Anne Baxter) but is stymied in his efforts by the sheriff's office. Several other viable suspects present themselves, people who had reason to hate Wade, including his stepfather and the sheriff's daughter.

Cannon is a detective series which ran on CBS from 1971 to 1976. The series was a Quinn Martin production, and featured many of the company's well-known stylistic quirks. Cannon marked the first time a QM series aired on a network other than ABC.Cannon stars William Conrad as the overweight detective Frank Cannon, who had resigned from the LAPD and become a private detective. He charged high fees to his well-to-do clients so that he could work for poorer clients at little or no charge. He also used it to indulge his high-priced lifestyle, which included maintenance on his Lincoln Continental Mark IV, which was frequently wrecked. Frank Cannon frequently crossed over to appear on Barnaby Jones, another QM series which ran concurrently with Cannon on CBS between January 1973 and the latter's cancellation. The Barnaby Jones character, played by Buddy Ebsen, was introduced in the third-season episode "Requiem for a Son" in 1973. The two-part episode "The Deadly Conspiracy" (1975) began on Cannon and concluded on Barnaby Jones.
